Massa Marittima
On the edge of a stunning hill this
charming town of Massa Marittima is one of the major tourist draws in
the region with an attractive medieval center.The heart of the old town is Piazza
Garibaldi, where most of the sights are concentrated: Palazzo del
Podestà, Palazzo dei Priori and the imposing Romanesque-Gothic
Cattedrale di San Cerbone, the finest example of religious
architecture in the province.The Palazzo del Podestà is the current
home to the Museo Archeologico.Up in the Città Nuova is the Torre del
Candeliere. The tower is linked to defensive bastions in the wall by
the vast sweep of Sienese arches. You can enter the tower and walk
across the arch for some amazing views over the old town and the
surrounding countryside.There is also an interesting medieval
festival held on the fourth Sunday in May and the second Sunday in
August the Balestro del Girifalco, highlighted by a crossbow
competition.
Parco Regionale della Maremma is an area of long, sandy beaches and reclaimed marshland, crisscrossed by dykes and drainage ditches. This nature park incorporates the Monti dell’Uccellina, which drop to a magnificentstretch of unspoiled coastline.Native wild boar, wild cats and porcupines share the area with herds of oxen and horses, all spread out over a string of mixing ecosystems: agricultural, forest, rocky and dune landscapes.Walking is the best way to explore its riches on 11 unique, signed walking trails, varying from 2.5kmto 12km long. Within surprisingly shorts distances, walks lead through thick pine forests into beaches, past caves, around bays, through marshes and bush land.Depending upon your trail, you stand a chance of spotting deer, wild boar, foxes and hawks.
The fine white sandy beach of
Castiglione della Pescaia can be reached directly from
Coliberto Farmhouse. Surrounded by pine forests and scrub that
provide serenity and peace it is the ideal place for families having
safe waters for children longing for fun and recreation.You can canoe along the River Bruna,
which splits the town into the reeds wilderness of the Castiglione
Marsh, a popular bird-watching destination for its cormorants,
herons, grebes and kingfishers. The river mouth is a great place to
buy fresh fish directly from the fishermen.No previous information can prepare you
for the first glimpse of the town Pitigliano from the road.It sits atop a honey-colored tufa rock
and its medieval center is an original mix of terracotta roofs and
tufa houses, which literally emerge from the rock in all shapes and
sizes.This town is the same for centuries: a
maze of narrow streets that follow one another, sometimes alleys so
narrow that a person can hardly pass.Here, every era has left its own
specific mark: Etruscan, Roman and medieval.There are at least 15 rock-sculpted
passages spreading out in every direction from the valleys under
Pitigliano. These sunken roads called vie cave are enormous, up to
20m deep and 3m wide,and are believed to be sacred routes
linking the necropolises and other sites associated withthe Etruscan religious cult. Every
spring on the night of the equinox (19 March) there is a torch-lit
procession down the Via Cava which culminates in a huge bonfire in
Pitigliano’s Piazza Garibaldi.It is a symbol of purification and
rebirth marking the end of winter.
Punta Ala means "Wing Point" because of the shape of this part of Tuscan coastline that extends out into the Mediterranean sea toward the Island of Elba.As a modern tourist center it has a long coast of sunny beaches and rocky cliffs which dropping into the blue sea.
